School Gardens

I am the co-author of ‘The Year Round School Organic Garden’ with Kerry Earth Education Project and Irish Seedsavers, which specialises in aiding schools set up organic school gardens. I was involved in the Bord Bia educational DVD – ‘Setting up Organic Gardens in Schools’ in 2008. I am a heritage specialist for the ‘Heritage in Schools’ scheme, since 2009 and I have been setting up organic school gardens since 2007 with Kerry Earth Education Project in Kerry and since 2010 with my own company in Kildare, Dublin and other places.

My aim is to guide the teachers, school and the children in creating an edible school garden and a living classroom, by creating a variety of native habitats in the school grounds such as native woodlands, heritage orchards, wildlife ponds, wildflower meadows, compost areas, and living willow structures. The children learn all about how to grow their own food, native trees, what plants and animals live in our various native habitats, through practical, hands-on projects and cross-curricular activities.
